TUESDAY 10th - SUNDAY 22nd OCTOBER 2017
While the Society has run many tours to Normanton there have been requests for us to travel further afield, visiting such places as Chillagoe, Burketown, Lawn Hill and the Riversleigh Fossil Fields. This tour will travel to those places as well as incorporating old favourites Gulflander, Cobbold Gorge and the Savannahlander.
This is the itinerary we have planned:-
Tue 10/10: In view of the many cheap airfares on offer these days passengers are free to make their own way to Cairns. The group will assemble in our designated hotel on Tuesday evening.
Wed 11/10: Following breakfast a chartered coach will collect the group from the hotel and take us to Chillagoe in time for lunch. After lunch there will be an inspection of the Donna Cave NOTE HOWEVER that this inspection is rather strenuous with many steps and does require a fair degree of fitness. For this reason this inspection has not been included in the tour fare. Consider your physical ability and if you would like to proceed complete the optional extras section on the booking form. At the conclusion of this inspection the coach will take everybody to Mungana, former end of the railway line, where there are many self-guided cave formations where you will all be free to ramble. We then return to Chillagoe for dinner and overnight. Due to lack of accommodation availability the group will be split between three establishments. BD
Thu 12/10: Breakfast will be served wherever you are staying then the coach will pick us all up for a tour of the Royal Arch Cave. Unlike the Donna this cave is available to any active person. On conclusion of this tour we will say “farewell” to Chillagoe and travel via Irvinebank to Herberton for lunch then onwards through Ravenshoe and Mt. Garnet to Mt. Surprise for overnight. BD
Fri 13/10: It will be a fairly easy day today as we proceed via Georgetown and Croydon to Normanton. BD
Sat 14/10: There’s more distance to be travelled today. We will call in at Burke & Wills Camp 119 on our way to Floraville and Burketown (lunch included). Then there will be an afternoon stop at the remote Gregory Downs Hotel before the last section over mainly dirt road to Adel’s Grove at the Lawn Hill National Park. NOTE: As there is another group already booked here we may not all have private facilities in our cabins. If it is necessary to put any of our group in shared facilities a small refund will be made to those involved. BLD
Sun 15/10: With a local guide we go to the Riversleigh Fossil Fields and see evidence that this area was once under the sea. We return to Adel’s Grove for lunch then go to Lawn Hill Gorge where you may hike, swim, go canoeing (or all 3!) or just laze by the cool water. Back to Adel’s Grove for dinner and bed. BLD
Mon 16/10: An early start will be made from Adel’s Grove travelling back to Gregory Downs thence to the Burke & Wills Roadhouse for lunch. It’s a bitumen road from there to Normanton and on to Karumba where, after checking in at our motel, we will go for a sunset croc-spotting cruise on the Norman River which will include nibblies and drinks. Then it’s back to our motel for dinner. BD
Tue 17/10: We’ll have a bit of a look around Karumba before returning to Normanton. That afternoon we have arranged a chartered trip on the ancient railmotor RM60 to the 4-Mile angle and return. BD
Wed 18/10: We travel on the regular Gulflander service to Croydon. There will be time for lunch there then our coach will take us on a bit of a sight-seeing tour of the town thence to Georgetown for overnight. BD
Thu 19/10: Breakfast will be at our motel in Georgetown then we head to Cobbold Gorge for lunch. There will then be a tour of the area and a cruise in an electric boat through the gorge. We proceed to Forsayth for overnight. BLD
Fri 20/10: Following breakfast in our hotel we will walk across the road to the railway station and board the Savannahlander for Mt. Surprise. Meanwhile our coach will take our luggage and meet us at Mt. Surprise on our arrival and take us to our accommodation. OPTION: If you would like to go on an inspection of the Undara Lava Tubes this is an optional extra. Please complete the appropriate section on the booking form if you would like to visit this Heritage listed place BD
Sat 21/10: We rejoin the Savannahlander for the journey through Alma Den, Petford, Dimbulah and Mareeba to Cairns where we will be met by our coach (which will have transported our luggage) and taken to our hotel. B
Sun 22/10: The tour concludes after breakfast. B
