The 1550 class (introduced 1972) and the 2400 class (1977) can be broadly grouped together as the same class, the later having more modern control equipment, but both having the same running gear & short-hood arrangement.
The 1550 class were the first class to use an Alternator instead of Generator, but still used the same 645 powerplant as found in the 1502 class. On these locos began the introduction of an air-conditioned cab for the crew, which has become a feature on all subsequent locos and locos which undergo overhaul.
Most of the class are still in operation, although now as Driver Only Operation (DOO) featuring only one driving station & new "Maxi" cab. A number of the class have also been totally rebuilt into the "new" 2300 class, which has new control equipment and turbo-charged 645 engine.
