Although externally the 1502 class look identical to the 1460 class, the 1502 class introduced in 1967 featured quite a number of changes. In a response to the 1300 class introduced by English Electric, GM were looking to increase the power of their similar weight (90t) locomotives and this came in the form of a new powerplant, the 645E. The 645E produced 1650hp (1230kW) which while still not quite as powerful as the 1300 class, was still powerful enough to haul comparative loads.
Once again, like their predecessors, these were popular locos with the crews and reliable performers.
As new locos were purchased, the need for the 1502 class diminished, and by the late 1990s all of them were "stored" in holding yards at the Redbank railway workshops.
A number of the class were sold to New Zealand where they were rebuilt with a "chopped" nose and other modifications, and have been reported to be giving faithful service.
A number of the class have also been converted for use on standard-gauge using ex-NSW 49 class bogies & a "Maxi" cab, the new class being designated as the "423" class .
