The 1450 class represented a refinement of the slightly earlier 1400 class. With the introduction of Co-Co bogies, and other small changes on the same basic model, the 1450 class became an extremely useful group of locomotives. No longer plagued by wheelslip issues, and with better wheelslip controls for the driver, the class started to break load records. On the 31st of July, 1959, 1458 hauled a record load of 1117 tons from Brisbane to Toowoomba, the heaviest load ever hauled in a single train to that date!

These popular locomotives ran many miles before their withdrawal in the late 1980's. 1450 held the record for "most miles traveled" for many years, totaling over 3.85 million kilometres at it's time of withdrawal in 1988! The class did not feature any noise suppression when introduced, which quickly lead to complaints over noise. The class had mufflers fitted to appease the problem, which did not seem to affect the performance in any way.

Class leader 1450 has been retained by QR heritage.
