In the 1950's, the General Motors Corporation (USA) was investigating potential worldwide markets for its locomotives, and selected Clyde engineering in Sydney to produce locomotives in Australia. QR was offered a "G12" based locomotive on trial and this offer was accepted during February, 1954.

The locomotive offered was a "hood" unit in a similar configuration to the 1150 class, but used a 2-stoke GM 567C 12-cylinder engine with a power rating of 1425hp (1063kW).

The locomotives performed well, although the A1A-A1A configuration meant they had a tendency to slip on gradients with heavy trains. For this reason, especially in later years, they were kept away from the more heavily graded lines.

By the late 1980's most of the 1400 class had disappeared, having been displaced by their later more powerful brethren. Only two of the class escaped the cutters blowtorch, 1400 which has been retained by the ARHS, and 1407 which has been retained by QR.
