The 1300 class was ordered in response to an increase in coal traffic on the Moura line. When introduced (1967), they were the most powerful narrow gauge locomotives in Australia, using an English Electric 12CSVT engine of 1950hp (1454kW).
These versatile locomotives worked in every part of the state after being displaced from their coal duties by the Clyde/GM loco's in the 1970's until the late 1980's when it was decided by QR that it was going to "standarise" its locomotive fleet on the Clyde/GM loco's and dispose of the English Electric based locomotives.
In 1988 the 1300 class were purchased by ANR for use in Tasmania, where they became the ZC class. Not all the loco's were returned to service at this time, some being retained by ANR for spares.
Some of the ANR locos have since been sold to an overseas company for rebuilding, with the intention being the locomotives would operate in their converted form (new cab & re-gauged to metre gauge) in Malaysia. The contract was not completed, and a number of this new "MKA" class have remained in Australia, now owned by Pacific National, and used once again on Queensland Rails!
