The 1270 class was mechanically similar to the 1255 class and were fitted with an English Electric 12SVT four stroke engine of 1650hp. The class was introduced from 26 October 1964 and consisted of two batches. The first batch was 1270 to 1281.
The class was introduced for the heavy coal traffic in Central Queensland. The last few of the class were fitted with Dynamic brakes. Of the class only 1270 and 1281 survive.
1270 is presently in Cairns
1281 is presently in the Workshops Museum at Ipswich. This locomotive was painted gold in 1965 for the Queensland centenary and at the time it was announced that this livery was only to last ten years. The locomotive was at Grandchester in company with 1461 on air conditioned cars.
The 1270 class locomotives have had a number of accidents during their careers but the most noteworthy would be 1296 which was involved in an accident at Bluff in which the crew perished.
