This class was basically 1200 in data specification. They were powered by an English Electric 12SVT four stroke engine but had a different car body. They had the streamlined nose with a full width cab, but had a hood unit configuration behind the cab. Even though they were fitted with rear headlights they still only had one driving station. Introduced from 22 July 1959 until 30 December 1959 with 1254. They had no multiple unit capability and were never converted to auto couplers like the 1255 class.
Two were withdrawn before the end. 1252 was destroyed by fire at The Leap on 12 October 1980 and 1253 had a fire at Yarwun on 24 September 1982.
1250 and 1251 changed identities for a while and it was a most unusual sight seeing two 1250's being cut up. 1251 was the one with a hole above the coupling on the front as it was reduced to scrap.
These were virtually the same locomotives as 1250 class but were capable of multiple uniting. The class was introduced from 30 September 1960. They were built in two batches. Batch two was in service from 25 July 1963 and included 1265 and 1266. They did sterling work on the coal lines before being displaced by the 1270 and 1300 class, and later the Clyde 2100 class.
All except 1263 were converted from the round Stones Headlight to twin sealed beams after overhauls. 1263 was last overhauled on 15 April 1976 and 1262 was treated on 15 September 1977. The 1255 class was converted to auto couplers during their service lives. 1255 was cut up with 1200 class heads even though the motors had a different power rating. Power rating depended on the turbo boost, and on the ability of the generator and traction motors.
