In the 1950's plans were introduced to dieselise the states rail system. Expressions of interest were called and eventually two firms each received an order for ten locomotives. These firms were the:
International General Electric Company of Erie, Pennsylvania, USA, operating through an Australian Consortium called Australian Electrical Industries (AEI), and the English company English Electric through its Australian branch.
Both companies built their locomotives overseas and imported them in an assembled state. The first delivery came from AEI and entered service in 1952. The builder was General Electric USA. They have a CO x CO wheel arrangement and are powered by a Cooper-Bessemer FVL-12-T four stroke engine of 1100 bhp with a tractive effort of 31.000 lbs. Total weight of each unit is 88ton (90T).
- 1150 to 1159 entered service between 6 November 1952 and 5 February 1953 (as 1210 to 1219).
- 1153 (as 1213) was the first diesel-electric in service.
- 1160 to 1162 were built by Goninan in Sydney in 1956.
- 1156 was the first QR Diesel Electric Locomotive to travel 1,600,000 km (1,000,000 miles).
- 1159 is located at North Ipswich and is owned by QR.
1150 was purchased for preservation by the ARHSQ and is today based in Townsville where the Northern Division of the Society is undertaking the task of restoring the locomotive to it's former glory.
