Rosewood Railway Report
Operations
The April running day was spread out over the afternoon of Sunday the 25th April and all of Monday 26th April due to Anzac day being on the Sunday. The total number of passengers for the weekend totaled 69. Our steam driver for a day program continued with another participant completing a day fulfilling their dream of driving and firing our C17 during April.
Current Projects
During the month of April there was some considerable effort to give the platform at Kunkala a much needed clean as well as the long awaited transfer of the diesel generator, which has been stored on the platform for several years, to the ALY wagon ready to be set up again.
The spare PB15 boiler at Kunkala has been assessed by our boiler inspector with the conclusion that it is uneconomical to perform the required repairs to make it serviceable due to severe wastage on the bottom of the barrel and on the throat plate, some areas it was down to half the original thickness! This finding is unfortunate for the eventual restoration of PB15 738, the next step is to get the boiler that is currently on 738 assessed for its serviceability however it has been recommended that we investigate the design and construction of a welded PB15 boiler which would be the best solution to getting 738 back in service again.
Help Needed
Twenty-five years ago the Society began work on the Rosewood Railway following an overwhelming vote of approval by the membership. The first train operated just 4 years later after a great effort by Society members to rehabilitate the track and rolling stock. There is no question that the Railway has been an outstanding success and has been the inspiration to other groups around Queensland.
A generation has now passed and so, as to be expected, we need new volunteers to join us to keep the dream alive. We are particularly looking for people who are fit (or who want to be fit) to join our track gang for some “outdoor exercise” once or twice a month. You will learn some new skills and make a positive contribution to preserving our railway heritage. You will also have an opportunity to be trained as operational staff as a guard or station master and later as a fireman and driver.
